Spinal Fellowships

Post CCT Advanced Spinal Fellow in Complex Spinal Surgery

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds | August 2022 – August 2023

The spinal surgery unit at Leeds has an international reputation as a centre of excellence for the treatment of spinal pathologies. It is home to one of two National Spine Fellowships set up by Professor Robert Dickson and Mr Gerry Towns in the 1990s to provide ‘interface’ training in spinal surgery that encompassed both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical disciplines. I am an accomplished Spinal Fellow with a strong track record at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. My experience includes the management of both paediatric and adult spinal conditions on both an elective and acute setting.

I have clinical experience in a range of paediatric spinal conditions including the management of paediatric spinal deformity. This includes early onset scoliosis, adolescent idiopathic, neuromuscular and syndromic scoliosis. My surgical experience in management includes the use of casting techniques, graduation surgery, and definitive fusion surgery.

In adult spinal surgery my experience includes the management of degenerative conditions including spinal stenosis, myelopathy, spondylolisthesis, degenerative spinal deformity, spinal infections, metastatic spinal tumours and trauma from occiput to pelvis.

My dedication extends to medical education, with contributions in teaching, research, and audit projects. I hold an educational contract with Stryker and instruct on an international complex spine course. I've gained extensive experience through collaboration with both neurosurgeons and orthopaedic spinal surgeons during my fellowship. My background, expertise, and commitment position me well for a consultant role, where I can apply my extensive clinical experience and contribute to spinal services.

Post CCT Spinal Disorders Fellowship - Current

Alder Hey Childrens Hospitals, Liverpool | August 2023 – February 2024

Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust February 2024-August 2024

My experience in Alder Hey encompassed the management of a wide array of paediatric spinal conditions including the clinical and surgical management of paediatric deformity to include early and late onset scoliosis. This experience includes the management of neuromuscular, syndromic, idiopathic and congenital scoliosis. The fellowship allowed for consolidation of surgical skills in performing posterior spinal fusion with supplementation of enabling technologies including O-arm and navigation.

At the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospitals I will gain further exposure to Adult Spinal Disorders with focus on Complex adult spine deformity and Spinal Endoscopy as one of the leading centers in spinal endoscopy in the United Kingdom.

Research Career Summary

Masters of Research (MRes) The University of Manchester, Heart and Lung Transplant Centre

September 2010- September 2011

I have a strong background in academic research. My MRes degree provided a strong foundation and a solid understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and its role in protecting patients and ensuring the validity of trial data.

I am familiar with research governance and the Human Tissue Act, I can handle patient and public engagement in research. My MRes included experience in the interpretation of information from clinical trials and in statistical analysis techniques.

My clinical research includes work published in peer reviewed journals and work presented at national meeting. Notably I have experience in both laboratory research and clinical research. My contributions include a high impact Randomised Control Trial in the cardiothoracic unit in Manchester as a part of my MRes which was later published on the use of drains in endoscopic surgery.
